The Landscape Edging Process
Estimate
and Layout
Edge Pros offers free estimates and consultations. At this time, we can offer
some suggestions with the layout to help make your landscaping beautiful yet
easy to take care of. We can follow existing landscaping or come up with a whole
new design. We use spray paint to mark out the final layout and prepare for installation.
Ground Preparation
Ground preparation consists of removing any old edging and preparing a bed where
the new concrete edging will be installed. For this, we use a small sod cutter
which removes a strip of sod about nine inches wide and two inches deep. Once
the sod is removed, we make sure the final trench is even and level so the final
product will be smooth.
Mixing Concrete
The next step of the process is to mix the concrete. All concrete is mixed
on-site with a small cement mixer mounted on a trailer. You don’t have
to worry about large ready-mix trucks tearing up your yard. We use a special
mixture recipe that includes several strengthening agents, as well as the color of your choice.
Extruding
The extrusion process is probably the most unique step of the installation.
We use a specialized machine that forms the edging as it moves along the trench.
This method is known as “free-form”, which means we can create
any shape you desire. We have several forms available to create different styles of curbing.
Finishing
Once the edging has been created, we use finishing trowels to make sure the
concrete has a smooth finish with few imperfections. Because the concrete
is still soft at this time, we can shape it and form it by hand if any changes
need to be made.
Stamping (Optional)
If you choose to have a stamping pattern imprinted in your edging, this is
the last step of the installation. When the curbing is finished and smooth,
yet still soft, we use a molded roller with the stamp pattern of your choice
to create an impression in the edging. We use a tinted release agent, which
creates a secondary color to accent your concrete.
Sealing
When the surface of the concrete is cured (1-5 days depending on temperature)
we will apply a UV-resistant sealer that will help preserve the color pigment
in your curbing. The sealer also gives the edging a rich color and a slight
luster. We recommend re-applying a sealer every other year. Edge Pros offers
a service package, which includes bi-annual cleaning and sealing of your
edging. If you would rather do it yourself, concrete sealer is available
at most hardware stores and can be applied with a garden sprayer.
